CPVC vs UPVC for Pune homes: which pipe goes where?

The most common plumbing question we get at the Kothrud counter. Here's the plain-English answer — no jargon — so you (or your plumber) spec the right pipe the first time.

The 10-second answer

CPVC for hot water. UPVC for cold-only and column/borewell. SWR for drainage. Most Pune homes use a mix — CPVC on geyser and hot lines, UPVC on cold-only feeds. When in doubt, use CPVC; it handles both hot and cold, it's just dearer.

If you're renovating a flat in Kothrud, finishing a tower in Baner, or fixing a leak in Bavdhan, the pipe question comes up fast. CPVC and UPVC look similar on the shelf, cost differently, and get confused constantly. Picking wrong means either over-paying (CPVC where you didn't need it) or a failure down the line (UPVC on a hot line that softens and sags). Here's how to get it right.

What's the actual difference?

Both are plastic plumbing pipes, but they're chemically different and built for different jobs:

  • CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) — handles hot and cold water, higher pressure, and is certified for drinking water. This is your hot-water pipe.
  • UPVC (Unplasticised PVC) — handles cold water only, lower cost, great for cold feeds and borewell/column work. Will deform under sustained heat.
  • SWR (Soil, Waste & Rainwater) — a third category entirely, for drainage and waste, not pressurised supply. Don't confuse it with the two above.

What this means for a typical Pune home

A standard 2 or 3 BHK renovation usually ends up with both pipes:

  • Hot lines (geyser to bathroom mixers, hot feed to kitchen) → 15mm Astral CPVC SDR 11
  • Cold-only lines where there's no heat → UPVC to save cost
  • Mains riser (especially in towers) → 20mm or 25mm CPVC, sized to outlet count and floor
  • Drainage / waste75mm and 110mm SWR (separate system)
  • Borewell / columnUPVC column pipe or Astral Aquasafe Agri, by pressure rating

The Pune-specific bit: water pressure

Pune Municipal (PMC/PCMC) supply pressure varies a lot by pocket and floor. In high-rise buildings in Baner, Balewadi, Wakad and Hinjewadi, the riser and pump setup matter — under-spec the CPVC schedule and you get pressure issues on upper floors; over-spec and you waste money. For towers above roughly 8 floors, confirm the CPVC pressure rating against your pump and tank height before buying. We do this check at the counter — bring your floor count and tank setup.

Frequently asked

Can I use UPVC for hot water lines?
No. UPVC isn't rated for hot water — sustained heat softens and deforms it over time. Use CPVC for any hot line (geyser to mixer, hot feeds). UPVC is fine for cold-only lines and column/borewell work.
Which is more expensive, CPVC or UPVC?
CPVC costs roughly 1.5x–2x more than UPVC per metre for equivalent sizes, because it handles heat and higher pressure. Most Pune homes use a mix — CPVC on hot lines, UPVC on cold-only and column work — to balance cost.
What CPVC size for a Pune apartment bathroom?
For most Pune apartment bathrooms, 15mm (½") Astral CPVC SDR 11 covers branch lines to taps and geyser, with 20mm–25mm for mains risers depending on outlets and floor count. For towers above 8 floors, check the pressure rating with us first.
Is CPVC safe for drinking water?
Yes — CPVC is certified for potable hot and cold water, doesn't leach, and is standard for residential supply across India. SWR (drainage) pipe is a different product and is never used for potable water.
Which pipe for a Pune borewell or column application?
Use UPVC column pipe or Astral Aquasafe Agri for borewell/column and agricultural work, chosen by required pressure rating (PN-6 to PN-12.5) and depth. These are cold-water pressure pipes — not CPVC.
